What Minneapolis’ own disposal rules mean for you

Hennepin County works differently from the counties east of the river: its drop-off centers will take large appliances, mattresses and TVs — but for a per-item fee, and neither center is in Minneapolis.

• Hennepin County Recycling Center and Transfer Station, 8100 Jefferson Highway, Brooklyn Park — the only one of the two that takes mattresses and box springs.
• South Hennepin Recycling and Problem Waste Drop-Off Center, 1400 West 96th Street, Bloomington.
• Both require proof that you are a Hennepin County household — a driver’s license or utility bill. Large appliances, mattresses, TVs, monitors, laptops and tires all carry a per-item charge, and those charges change, so check before you drive out.
• Furniture is not accepted at either site. The county points people to Choose to Reuse for anything still usable.
• Minnesota law bars major appliances, cathode-ray-tube electronics and yard waste from household trash entirely (Minn. Stat. 115A.9561, 115A.9565, 115A.931).
